PROJECT SUPPORTED: Powell River-Sunshine Coast MLA Nicholas Simons has announced a grant for Powell River Education Services Society to create a social network pilot project.

Powell River-Sunshine Coast MLA Nicholas Simons has stated that a grant of $39,720 for a local nonprofit organization will support projects that advance accessibility and inclusion in the community.

“With the International Day for Persons with Disabilities tomorrow [December 3], I am especially pleased to be announcing this year’s successful recipients,” stated Simons in a media release. “This year’s accessibility projects showcase innovative solutions for a barrier-free BC, an accessible, inclusive province that works for everyone.”

In Powell River-Sunshine Coast, Powell River Education Services Society (PRESS) will be receiving $39,720 for the SOAR Social Network Pilot Project.

According to a media release from the ministry of social development and poverty reduction, PRESS will create and test drive an innovative model for a safe, supported online site designed to promote friendship and supportive social connections among adults with lifelong developmental disability in the small towns of the Sunshine Coast and Comox Valley. The release stated that this is a model intended to be adapted and transferred to other rural communities through BC and Canada.

The release from Simons stated that local investment is part of nearly $450,000 in grants being provided to 12 nonprofits across BC for projects that reduce barriers and showcase solutions for an accessible province.

The intake for this round of grants opened in August of this year, and invited local projects that focused on employment, emergency planning and response, arts, culture and tourism, sports and recreation, and more.
