Maureen Mason is one of 11 candidates running for five spots as Powell River Board of Education trustee.
In a press release to the Peak, she described Powell River as having a “rich and vibrant culture,” with the role of school trustee being “first and foremost to ensure that the values, beliefs and interests of this diverse community are represented in public education.”
Mason has 20 years’ experience working in public education, government and business building cultural capacity for collaborative leadership, she said.
Her work with the ministry of education, BC Teachers’ Federation and Simon Fraser University has expanded her understanding of public education’s social and political considerations, she added.
“Public education, like many systems of governance, is at a fork in the road,” she said. “While many talk about the need for a return to models of deep democracy, few have the capacity and skill to make this happen.”
She believes Powell River is ready to take a leap from ordinary to extraordinary. “My role as trustee would be to support the evolution of this journey.”
