UNLOCKS DOORS: Funding for an adult literacy and learning program in qathet region has been announced by Powell River – Sunshine Coast MLA Nicholas Simons.

Powell River-Sunshine Coast MLA Nicholas Simons indicates that people looking to improve their skills in reading, writing, math and digital literacy will benefit from increased access to free adult literacy programs across BC.

“Literacy is more than the ability to read and write, it unlocks the door to new opportunities,” stated Simons in a media release. “Our government knows the difference education can make. Not only do programs like these help people in their daily lives, they help people reach their goals.”

Included in the latest round of funding is Lift Community Services of qathet Society and its community adult literacy and learning adult and family programs.

The release stated that the BC government invests $3.4 million annually to support the community adult literacy program. This funding will support 102 adult literacy programs in 132 communities, supporting more than 16,000 people across BC. This annual investment builds on last year’s 97 programs in 128 communities, the release stated.

These community-based, adult, family and Indigenous literacy programs help people gain skills in basic literacy, numeracy, life skills and employment preparation. The programs are delivered by trained volunteers and include one-on-one-tutoring and small-group classes, the release stated.
