qathet Regional District’s (qRD) board has no objection to one mining lease but does not support another, both based on Texada Island.

At the July 28 regional board meeting, directors had no objection to the renewal of a mining lease for a period of 30 years on district lot 573 on Texada. Lehigh Hanson Materials Ltd has been the recorded holder of the lease since December 28, 1991.

However, for district lot 589, regional directors did not support extending the mining lease for a 30-year term due to the recreational and environmental value of the Stromberg Falls area situated in the centre of the lot. According to a staff report, there is a need to protect the unique topography in the area of the falls, and because of its designation as a high priority acquisition site by qRD.

Lehigh Hanson is also the holder of the lease on this property.

The recommendations will be passed to the provincial ministry of energy, mines and low carbon innovation.

At the July 12 planning committee meeting, regional directors considered a referral from BC Ministry of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation to renew mining lease 308820 for 30 years for district lots 573 and 589.
