qathet Regional District's board will consider offering rebates to Tla'amin Nation applicants who exchange uncertified wood stoves for EPA- or CSA-certified wood stoves.

Board orientation

qathet Regional District’s (qRD) committee of the whole is recommending the board hire a consultant for orientation of the new regional board after the local government elections in October.

At the January 13 committee of the whole meeting, directors voted the board recommend engaging Eli Mina, board effectiveness consultant and registered parliamentarian, and George Cuff, consultant, to each perform a new board orientation following the local government elections, at a cost of $15,500 plus travel expenses and books, and direct staff to include the cost in the coming 2022 operations budget.

Offering rebates

The regional board will consider offering rebates to Tla’amin Nation applicants within Tla’amin lands in the amount of $600 for the exchange of an uncertified wood stove to an EPA- or CSA-certified wood stove, $1,000 for the exchange of an uncertified wood stove to an EPA- or CSA-certified pellet-fuelled appliance or electric fireplace insert, and $1,500 for an electric heat pump in the 2022 woodstove exchange program.

New park

The committee recommended the board support in principle the establishment of a new regional park on Lasqueti Island that consists of the unused road allowance at the end of Spring Bay Road, subject to feasibility, and that the board direct staff to contact the provincial ministry of transportation and infrastructure to ask about feasibility and options for use of this road allowance as a qRD regional park.
