qathet Regional District’s board has directed staff to inform the Lund Community Society that the old Lund fire hall at 9642 Larson Road is not suitable for the society’s proposal.

On June 16, qRD's committee of the whole referred the matter to the regional board for a decision.

At the June 30 regional board meeting, directors voted to deny a request from the society for use of the vacated building.

According to a staff report, the building has been deemed not suitable by a professional engineer, and that the qRD will be at considerable risk if the building is occupied by the public. The report stated that the cost to properly repurpose the building would exceed the cost of a new building of similar size.

The report stated that the building was not built to code, the structure does not have the proper spacing for wood frame construction, is not cross-braced, and the footings lack reinforcing. It further states that the structure is not built to resist wind or earthquake lateral loads.
