Sending letter

qathet Regional District’s board of directors will be sending a letter to City of Powell River recommending that yard and garden waste be included in the curbside collection of organic waste along with food waste.

Directors voted to send the letter at the April 28 board meeting after receiving a staff report indicating that organics collection in the regional district, both self-haul and with the city’s pilot organics curbside collection program, has always included the commingled collection of yard and garden waste with food scraps.

According to the report, the city requested a letter outlining reasons why commingling of yard and garden waste should be continued when the city expands to a full rollout of its curbside collection service, when an organics facility comes online, and when the city procures a third garbage truck. The report listed a number of reasons why yard waste and food waste should be combined in any collection of organics.

Gangway disposal

Staff have been directed to dispose of the old Savary Island dock gangway that is being held in storage, and that any proceeds from the sale be credited to the regional parks general service.

According to a staff report, the board approved improvements and renovations to the dock in 2016. The improvements resulted in the gangway being replaced and the old gangway being surplus. It has been stored at the qRD maintenance facility since its replacement.

Disposal approved

Disposal and shipment of old and obsolete firefighting equipment from qathet Regional District fire services to the Defend Ukraine Foundation in Burnaby, BC, for distribution to Ukraine, has been approved by the regional board. The cost of shipping the equipment to Burnaby is to be borne proportionately, based on approximate volume, by the fire services donating the gear as a cost of disposal, and that if the Gillies Bay improvement district adds equipment to the donation, that it contribute a proportionate share of the shipping cost based on approximate volume.

Sanctions renovations

At the April 28 Powell River Regional Hospital District board meeting, directors approved Miklat Recovery Society’s renovation plans for the former St. John Ambulance building at 5907 Arbutus Avenue in Townsite.

The society is seeking to renovate the facility from a secondary care to a primary care facility to double its bed capacity to provide treatment to men with substance use disorder.
