In alignment with phase two of the provincial restart plan, qathet Regional District playground equipment and tennis courts will open on June 1.
According to a media release from the regional district, Vancouver Coastal Health believes the risk of COVID-19 transmission in outdoor recreation environments is low and that it is possible to safely operate these facilities without additional cleaning protocols.
“There is no evidence to show that routine disinfecting would decrease the risk of transmission; use of all equipment will remain at the user’s own risk” stated manager of operational services Patrick Devereaux in the media release. “Park users are reminded to follow all recommendations and protocols as outlined by health authorities. Signs will be placed around park structures reminding the public of physical distancing and personal hygiene guidelines. The public should plan for shorter visits as some park amenities may not be available.”
The media release advises people using playground equipment and tennis courts to come prepared to provide for their family’s personal hygiene, and ensure their children are interacting with the playground structures and other children safely.
“Do not visit our parks if you have symptoms of COVID-19 or have been exposed to anyone showing symptoms,” stated Devereaux. “qathet Regional District is monitoring the COVID-19 situation and will evaluate services in line with health services authority orders and guidelines.”
