Layton died just before 5 am on Monday, August 22 of an undisclosed form of cancer. By late morning, people were leaving bouquets of flowers with notes on the edge of the Centennial Flame.

Layton, 61, led his party to Official Opposition status in this year’s federal election. He had been on a leave of absence as party leader since July 25.

Urban hens – City of Powell River council has asked planning department staff to prepare a revised amendment to the animal control bylaw regulating hen keeping. Councillors gave the direction at the August 18 committee-of-the-whole meeting. They asked for a revision that would leave regulations for the RA1 zone, located in Wildwood, unchanged.
