End of summer party

Planet Cleve food vendor cart owners Cleve Hamilton and Elaine Teichgraber are going to be at Willingdon Beach on Labour Day, Monday, September 2. They are inviting the community for a Labour Day/back-to-school party. They are inviting entertainers and other vendors to join them from noon until after Quality Foods’ Festival of Lights fireworks that are being rescheduled for that day.

Hamilton and Teichberger are donating 10 per cent of their proceeds to Powell River Action Centre Food Bank and encourage people to bring a food item.

Red tide

Unacceptable levels of PSP (paralytic shellfish poisoning) have led Fisheries and Oceans Canada to revise closures of shellfish harvesting.

Subareas 15-1 and 15-5 are closed to all bivalve shellfish except manila clams, littleneck clams, oysters and mussels. Subareas 15-2 and 15-3 are closed to all bivalve shellfish except manila clams, littleneck clams, oysters, mussels, geoduck and horse clams. The balance of Area 15 is closed to all bivalve shellfish.

Savary fire ban

While the open fire ban has been lifted for all areas around the Coastal Fire region, fire officials on Savary Island are planning to hold out until after the Ladbour Day long weekend.

Doug Smith, Savary Island Volunteer Fire Department deputy fire chief, reported that conditions on Savary are still quite dry and windy. Smith said that fire risk is particularly high on the island because an out-of-control campfire can quickly become an interface fire that the department would be challenged to put out.
