Committee recommends youth act changes

The Select Standing Committee on Children and Youth chaired by Powell River-Sunshine Coast MLA Nicholas Simons released its report on February 28.

The all-party committee was tasked to review the Representative for Children and Youth Act and made nine recommendations to strengthen the act.

Highlights of the report include expanding the representative for children and youth's mandate to advocate for young adults who have been in care; clarifying the representative's existing mandate with respect to advocating for children and young adults with special needs; confirming the representative's authority to monitor and oversee that the child and youth-serving system includes internal government reviews of child welfare matters; reviewing the provision of services under the act's regulation; and amending the section requiring the committee to review the act every five years to determine if the representative's functions are still required.
