Decision on ferry names

Names announced for BC Ferries’ three new intermediate-class ferries are Salish Orca, Salish Eagle and Salish Raven.

BC Ferries appointed judges to select the names after receiving more than 7,100 entries in its ferry naming contest this summer.

According to a BC Ferries press release dated July 28, the names were chosen to honour the Coast Salish people and the Salish Sea where these vessels will operate.

BC Ferries also invited the public to respond on social media using the #nameaferry hashtag, which saw the public offer humorous suggestions, such as the Christy Clark Ark or Spirit of the Wallet Sucker.

Salish Orca, set to arrive in BC in late summer 2016, will replace the 50-year old Queen of Burnaby on the Comox-Powell River route.

Salish Eagle and Salish Raven will arrive in fall of 2016 and winter 2017 to replace ferries on the Tsawwassen and Southern Gulf Island routes.

Fishing closures

A fresh water fishing ban has been announced for much of the South Coast.

Streams and rivers from the Toba Inlet south to the US border are closed to angling from July 22 to September 30.

On the Sunshine Coast the ban covers Wildlife Management Areas 2-12, 2-5 and 2-16 including the Power River mainland region.

Lakes and reservoirs are excluded from the ban.
