Pot bust

Members of the Powell River RCMP along with the assistance of Island District Emergency Response Team and Nanaimo Police Dog Services executed a search warrant in the 9400 block of Gela Road. The search revealed a large marijuana production operation on site.

Approximately 1,400 marijuana plants in various stages of growth were located and seized along with numerous pieces of growing equipment. The number of plants seized would produce enough marijuana to supply every man, woman and child in Powell River with just over 15 marijuana cigarettes each.

A 45-year-old male from Surrey is now facing charges of production of a controlled substance and theft of hydro.

This seizure came on the heels of another search warrant which was executed on August 31 in the 11000 block of Highway 101 South. As a result of this warrant over 300 plants were seized and a 33-year-old male and a 35-year-old female, both from Powell River, are facing charges of production of a controlled substance.

Both these grow operations had medical marijuana licences issued to the addresses but both were well over the amount authorized to grow.
