Playground plans
Children and families who frequent the playgrounds at Sunset and Mowat Bay city parks will have noticed that the playground structures have been taken down and removed.
City of Powell River Parks, Recreation and Culture is currently drawing up requests for proposals to purchase replacement equipment at the two parks, which is expected to be complete in the coming months.
The parks and recreation department received $85,000 from Powell River Community Forest last May. Those funds will be split between the parks for the planned purchases.
Parks director Ray Boogaards said the aging play structures needed to be replaced as they were becoming increasingly dangerous for use.
Boogaards was on hand at meetings of the Wildwood Ratepayers and the James Thomson Elementary School Parent Advisory Council to present options for Sunset Park’s play structure replacement early this month. Community consultation in Cranberry is also planned for the Mowat Bay playground.
He told residents attending the Wildwood Ratepayers’ meeting that, after initial consultation in July, respondents indicated a preference for equipment that promoted climbing.
Boogards provided several options of what could be purchased for $42,500 per park. Members of the Wildwood ratepayers group opted for a structure that also includes opportunities for sliding and imaginative play.
Also, the location of the Sunset Park play area will be relocated to the lower field area away from the trees.
