Fire destroys park concession

Fire investigators and the Texada Island RCMP are investigating a fire which destroyed the concession stand at Shelter Point Regional Park and Campground on Texada Island and significantly damaged the attached home early Tuesday morning. Volunteer firefighters from both Vanada and Gillies Bay volunteer fire departments were called at 1 am to combat the fire.

“They worked well together and kept the fire from spreading to the nearby forest and propane tanks,” said Ken Taylor, Gillies Bay fire chief. “But the food stand was destroyed.”

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, Taylor said.

Rod Wiebe of the Powell River RCMP said that a smoke detector in the home helped alert the home’s occupants and avoid any injuries.

A fire investigator from the Powell River RCMP is assisting with the investigation to determine how the fire started.

Shelter Point Park is operated by the Powell River Regional District. It is located on the west shores of Texada Island, just south of Gillies Bay.
