Trees fall in Townsite

A discovery of approximately 60 felled trees in Townsite on February 2 has officials at City of Powell River shaking their heads and investigating the incident.

The location of the trees, primarily alder and measuring from four to 18 inches in diameter, are in the vicinity of the location for Powell River’s new wastewater treatment plant, which is being disputed by Townsite residents, particularly along Laburnum and Larch avenues.

City engineering technologist Tully Kurtz responded to a call of reports that chainsaws were being used below Laburnum on the old golf course lands.

When Kurtz went to check out what was going on, he said he encountered two young men with chainsaws coming back up a hill, followed by a woman.

Tully said he assumes the fallers were hired to improve the view of a residence on Laburnum.

The land is owned by PRSC, a limited partnership between the city and Tees’Kwat Land Holdings.

PRSC co-manager Scott Randolph said at no time did he or anyone else from PRSC give permission to fell the trees.

PRSC has asked authorities to investigate the incident.

Ferry change begins

On February 5, BC Ferries removed MV Island Sky from service between Saltery Bay and Earls Cove for scheduled maintenance. Bowen Queen will replace the regular vessel until March 17.

Meanwhile, BC Ferries will continue the 8 pm Earls Cove to Saltery Bay sailing. The schedule change is intended to allow travellers catching the 5:30 pm ferry out of Horseshoe Bay to make the Earl’s Cove connection on time and safely.
