Dangerous cargo

BC Ferries has moved the dangerous cargo sailings on the Powell River-Texada Island route to accommodate staff attending a Northern Sunshine Coast Ferry Advisory Committee meeting.

The dangerous cargo sailings have been moved from Wednesday, April 10, the day of the meeting, to Thursday, April 11. Only dangerous cargo vehicles will be allowed on the 9:50 am sailing from Westview and the 3 pm from Texada.

Chuck Childress, president of Texada Action Now and a long-time Texada resident, said many island residents are just shaking their heads at the change. “It’s typical of BC Ferries to put the wants and wishes of the staff ahead of the needs of the travelling public,” he said.

Rosalie Pedneault, manager of the Texada Market, said she had to rearrange her schedule because the grocery delivery is on the sailing that is now designated for dangerous cargo only. “It happens enough as it is just because of things that you can’t control,” she said.

Task force

City of Powell River council appointed members to the Mayor’s Task Force on Economic Revitalization during the April 4 meeting.

Jay Yule, Marty Cattermole, David Morris, Arlette Raaen and Mark Anderson, all from Powell River Regional Economic Development Society, were appointed to the committee, along with members of the public, Don Allan, Cynthia Barnes, Steve Buskie, Claudia Medina-Culos, Robert Tindle and Jason Zroback.

Mayor Dave Formosa and councillors Debbie Dee and Chris McNaughton had previously been appointed.
