RCMP musical ride art

A series of paintings by noted artist Joan Larson, featuring the RCMP Musical Ride and entitled In Celebration of Canada, will be on display at Powell River Town Centre Hotel from April 15 to 18. Everyone is welcome to attend this free event, from 1 to 8 pm on Sunday and from 10 am to 8 pm Monday through Wednesday.

This will be the sixth exhibition in a series of planned events across Canada for Larson and her husband/manager Paul Smith of Creekside Studio in Qualicum Beach.

In the spirit of art and giving, they have donated a framed print to Bruce Denniston Bone Marrow Society and invited a representative to be on hand during the show.

Readers could win one of five prints by coming to the Peak office on Marine Avenue and filling out an entry form.

Theatre funds

Councillor Myrna Leishman reported at the April 5 City of Powell River council meeting that the Friends of the Historic Patricia Theatre has collected almost $40,000 and is expected to reach $45,000 by mid-April.

All distribution of movies will switch to digital format by the summer of 2012. The Patricia projects movies on film. The society has determined the theatre needs $90,000 to make the switch.

Leishman, who is council’s liaison to the society, explained the First Credit Union has agreed to assist the group with the remaining $45,000 if it raises the first half by the middle of April. The group will continue to fundraise to reach the $90,000 total.

UPDATED APRIL 12, 2012, 11 AM: Amy Sharp, president of the Friends of the Historic Patricia Theatre, contacted the Peak to explain the information about the First Credit Union was inaccurate. "The First Credit Union has not agreed to any funding, short-term or other, for the digital conversion for the Patricia Theatre," Sharp said. "We are in discussion only at this time."

Sharp also pointed out that as City of Powell River council's liaison to the society, Leishman was not a board member.

"The friends of the Patricia are very pleased with the ongoing support of the community," Sharp also said, adding that board members will be available to answer questions this weekend at a barbeque in front of Quality Foods. The event takes place from 11 am to 3 pm on Saturday, April 14. All proceeds go to the digital conversion campaign.
