City of Powell River officials are holding a strategic planning session from 9 am to 4:30 pm on Thursday, April 5 in the Elm Room at Powell River Recreation Complex.

While the session is open, members of the public will not be allowed to participate. However, they will be permitted to ask questions at the end.

Rachel Buskie has been contracted to facilitate the session. She has 10 years’ experience in change management and varied public service. She has worked in the British Isles, Australia and New Zealand.

A report by the Helios Group identified a need to improve the development and adherence to long-term and strategic plans. The report found that in the absence of long-term plans, the corporation lacks vision, impacting its ability to conduct prioritization with respect to efforts and resources.

Earth Hour saves energy

British Columbians saved 121 megawatt hours of electricity and reduced the provincial electricity load by 1.67 per cent during Earth Hour on Saturday, March 31. The savings, about the same as the 1.8 per cent drop in 2011, was the equivalent of turning off about nine million 12.5-watt LED light bulbs.

Powell River recorded a 3.6 per cent reduction in consumption. Revelstoke had the highest reduction, 12.1 per cent, while Fort St. James had the lowest, 0.2 per cent. In total, 91 communities across BC registered their participation in Earth Hour, an annual global event hosted by the World Wildlife Fund and supported provincially by BC Hydro.
