UPDATED: Three men, including the pilot, died in a helicopter crash on Sunday, July 31, in the Nelson Glacier area near Stewart, BC, 130 kilometres north of Prince Rupert. The passengers were on a “geological work-related flight,” according to RCMP.
Police have now confirmed that among those who died in the accident were 40-year-old Colin Dionne from Powell River and 32-year-old Mathieu Lefebvre-Masse who lived in Lund.
The investigation into the crash, by the Transportation Safety Board, BC Coroners Service and RCMP, is ongoing.
Airplane Park on Hernando Avenue is once again open following closure by the City of Powell River to deal with a mechanical malfunction that resulted in an overflow of liquid waste. Sprinklers were brought in to help dilute the waste and germicide to clean the field. By Wednesday, July 27, the city deemed the field fit to reopen, according to Bill Reid, director of parks, recreation and culture.
