Closure plans

City of Powell River council passed two motions at the December 5 council meeting that related to alternative service plans during the closure of the Westview ferry berth from January 12 to March 9, 2014.

Council approved entering into a service agreement with BC Ferries to provide transit shuttle service between the Westview and Saltery Bay ferry terminals. BC Ferries will pay all costs associated with operating the shuttle.

As well, council approved entering into a licence agreement with BC Ferries to permit the construction of temporary facilities at the Westview harbour to operate a water taxi service. BC Ferries will pay all costs associated with the installation and removal of infrastructure required to implement the service. The water taxi service will operate between Texada Island, at Texada Boat Club in Van Anda, and Westview.

Townsite wolves

Powell River conservation officers are asking the public to report any sighting of wolves in the area.

Despite recent social media accounts of wolves in Townsite, the conservation officer service has not received any official public complaints about wolves and has not put any resources into checking out the social media claims.

Conservation officer Andrew Anaka said he has read the social media posts and finds the reports to be out of character with wolf behaviour. He added it is unlikely that wolves would come down to the old golf course in Townsite, though they have been reported regularly in upper Westview.

To report a conflict with wildlife or to report a violation, readers can call the conservation officer service 24-hour reporting line at 1.877.952.7277.
