Searchers find hikers

Two hikers spent a cold Sunday night on the Sunshine Coast Trail after they failed to meet at a scheduled location.

Powell River Search and Rescue (PRSAR) society members were called out by the RCMP on the evening of December 1 to locate the man, 84 years old, and his daughter who were hiking in the area of Spring Lake. PRSAR was helped by searchers from Vancouver Island who arrived to increase their numbers in the field.

The hikers were eventually located at 7 am Monday, December 2, and both were very tired but in good health after spending the night in cold, wet and at times snowy conditions. PRSAR search manager Andy Evans said that the hikers had planned to be dropped off in one location and picked up in another, but they made more progress than they anticipated, missed their rendezvous point and ran out of daylight. “They did the right thing though and hunkered down for the night,” said Evans.

Police nab thief

A Powell River man was arrested for vehicle theft and breach of probation, after RCMP recovered a stolen pickup truck.

Bryn Nicol was taken into custody Wednesday, November 27, after an upper Westview resident reported that a 4x4 truck was stuck in the ditch around the 7500 block of Nootka Avenue, said Constable Tim Kenning.

Police attended and located the truck.

The 1996 blue and grey Ford F-150 was reported stolen a week earlier.

Nicol, who was on probation for previous offences, was charged with failing to comply with his probation order, possession of stolen property under $5,000 and mischief under $5,000.
