Marine rescue

Search and rescue technicians participating in a training exercise at Vivian Rocks had to be rescued themselves on Monday, December 3.

Captain Trevor Reid, with Royal Canadian Air Force 19 Wing Comox, said the Black Duck, a 16-metre auxiliary training vessel, got hung up on some rocks on Vivian Island during a search-and-rescue scuba diving exercise around 10:30 am. All nine people aboard were safely evacuated. “There were no injuries reported,” Reid said. “We’re happy to say that everybody is back safe in Comox.”

Jeff Olsson, marine search coordinator with the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Victoria, said a Cormorant helicopter from 19 Wing and a Canadian Coast Guard vessel from the Powell River station assisted with the evacuation.

The coast guard crew safely removed the vessel from the rocks on Tuesday morning and towed it to the south harbour.

Police seek witnesses

Powell River RCMP are asking for the public to assist by providing information about a recent incident.

About 6 am on Sunday, December 2, police responded to a report of an injured man lying in a driveway at a residence in the 7100 block of Field Street. The man, a 59-year-old Powell River resident, had sustained serious injuries and, as a result, he was flown to Vancouver General Hospital for treatment.

Police are investigating the cause of the injuries and are requesting that anyone with information or who may have witnessed the incident to contact the RCMP or CrimeStoppers at 1.800.222.8477 (TIPS).
