Land-based aquaculture

City of Powell River and Powell River Regional Economic Development Society (PRREDS) officials are soliciting letters of intent from companies interested in a proposed land-based aquaculture development.

Nine investors travelled to Powell River recently to learn more about the proposal, which would be located on land owned by PRSC Limited Partnership adjacent to Catalyst Paper Corporation’s mill, known as the old golf course lands.

Scott Randolph, PRREDS manager, said the idea is to generate revenue and jobs from the lands and different models are being investigated, including purchasing or leasing the lands.

Funds for youth

City of Powell River council has approved funds for renovating space at Oceanview Education Centre for the Youth Resource Centre.

Council voted to provide $53,000 to Powell River Child, Youth and Family Services Society (PRCYFSS) for the project.

As well, council approved $15,000 for Powell River Search and Rescue Society to go toward a mobile command unit.

The funds came from the community forest reserve account. Powell River Community Forest Ltd. board of directors recommended council approve the grants, which came from the uncommitted funds in the reserve account.

Setting it straight

Powell River Parks and Wilderness Society received $160,000 from a $1.6-million Island Coastal Economic Trust grant. The grant included funds for School District 47’s Haywire Bay facility and Powell River Model Community’s reconstruction of a barrier-free trail around Inland Lake.
