Health spending
Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) is requesting the Powell River Regional Hospital District cost share in a project that would expand storage space for Powell River General Hospital and Evergreen Extended Care Unit.
VCH is proposing a 44.1-square-metre stand-alone building be constructed off the existing link between the hospital and Evergreen to store materials and equipment. The total project cost is estimated at $236,236, with $121,665 coming from the ministry of health and $20,077 from VCH. The request is that the regional hospital district contribute 40 per cent of the project, or $94,494.
Project funding
BC’s government announced 51 new community projects, including one in Powell River, will receive funding to support the integration of immigrants in BC.
Powell River Employment Program Society is receiving $107,000 in WelcomeBC funding, as part of the Welcoming Communities Program.
Launched in 2008, the program targets 51 communities, in both large and small centres, to build capacity to support the integration of new immigrants. According to the provincial government, a community’s ability to receive immigrants is a critical factor in successful integration, which is integral to addressing BC’s labour market and demographic challenges over the next decade.
In total, the government is providing over $8.5 million to the community projects.
