Brinton relocates

Powell River RCMP staff sergeant Andy Brinton announced Friday, February 21, that he has accepted the position of chief of the Oak Bay Police Department effective April 22, 2014. Sergeant Rod Wiebe has been appointed to serve as interim detachment commander until this position is filled.

In a statement issued from the City of Powell River, Mac Fraser, chief administrative officer, said Brinton has served 32 years with the RCMP and is clearly respected and deserving of this new position. “His service has been exemplary in his time with us and he shall be greatly missed by his peers and the people in this community,” he said.

Brinton will be the 13th police chief in the history of the Oak Bay department. The 51-year-old takes over from Mark Fisher.

Fisher is stepping down after two and a half years with Oak Bay to lead the RCMP in Nanaimo.

Drug bust

A routine traffic stop has led to drug trafficking charges for a Powell River man.

The 41-year-old driver was pulled over for speeding in Gibsons just before noon on Monday, February 17.

“The driver was arrested after the officer detected an odour of marijuana in the vehicle,” said Sunshine Coast RCMP corporal Steve Chubey in a news release. “A search of the vehicle was conducted and a large quantity of marijuana bud was located and seized.”

Police seized approximately 16 kilograms of marijuana as well as the vehicle. The man was arrested for possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.
