Papal replacement
An estimated 1.2 billion Roman Catholics around the world, including those in Powell River, may not have to wait as long as expected to find out who will lead their church.
Pope Benedict XVI announced on Monday, February 25 an amendment to Roman Catholic church law that allows the process of choosing a new pope to begin earlier than March 15.
Benedict’s resignation, the first by a pope in nearly 600 years, takes effect on Thursday, February 28.
A new pope is chosen by a conclave of the College of Cardinals inside the Sistine Chapel in Rome. The process involves a series of secret ballots until one of the cardinals receives two-thirds of the votes.
Ten cardinals have been identified as potential frontrunners, including Cardinal Marc Ouelett, of Quebec City.
