Powell River Regional District directors passed a motion during an in-camera section of the February 23 board meeting appointing Wayne Brewer, Pat Christie, Stuart Glen, Dave Hodgins, David Moore, Sandy McCormick, Janet Southcott, Eagle Walz and Liz Webster to the parks and greenspace plan implementation advisory committee. Patrick Brabazon, Electoral Area A director, had previously been appointed chair of the committee. The board also approved the terms of reference for the committee.

The parks and greenspace plan, which the board accepted in November 2010, has 32 recommendations for parks, trails, access, recreation, protecting the environment and implementation. It recommends six candidate sites as park acquisition priorities including Stillwater Bluffs.

About 30 people concerned about potential logging at Stillwater Bluffs attended the regional district’s February 16 committee-of-the-whole meeting. Moore, Rita Rasmussen, Andy Durie and Mark Albert, from the Friends of Stillwater Bluffs, asked directors to consider purchasing District Lot 3040, property owned by Island Timberlands which encompasses a forest as well as the bluffs. Walz, president of Powell River Parks and Wilderness Society, and Wes Bingham, representing the Powell River chapter of the Sierra Club of Canada, supported the request to negotiate with the company for the purchase of the property in order to create a regional park.

Brabazon told the audience that the advisory committee will initially deal with the request for a park at Stillwater Bluffs.
