Family Day

Many Powell River workers are looking forward to a long weekend as Monday, February 11 is British Columbia’s first Family Day.

Premier Christy Clark announced the new statutory holiday last May. The holiday does not apply to workers in federally regulated industries.

BC alone has such a holiday on the second Monday of February. Five other provinces, including Alberta, observe a statutory holiday on the third Monday of February, which coincides with Presidents’ Day in the United States.

The province plans to spend $1.5 million on promoting the new holiday. Vancouver, Victoria, Nanaimo, Prince George, Cranbrook, Kamloops and Kelowna are hosting free special events that feature activities for families and children of all ages.

Vandals hit vehicles

Powell River RCMP is investigating a rash of car vandalism incidents. Police received nine reports of windows smashed and cars dented from January 20 to 22.

“We’ve had nine of them now,” said Constable Chris Bakker of the Powell River detachment. Bakker adds that most incident reports came in on Monday, January 21. As well as Westview, there was one report from Cranberry and one from Townsite.

“We maybe get one or two reports [of vehicle vandalism] each week,” said Bakker. “But to have a rash of nine all reported within a couple hours of each other is unusual.”

Police are asking anyone who has information on this or any other crime to call the detachment at 604.485.6255. To remain anonymous, callers can contact CrimeStoppers at 1.800.222.8477 (TIPS).
