BC teachers have announced their refusal to supervise provincial examinations later this month as a part of their job action related to contract negotiations between the BC Teachers’ Federation and the BC Public School Employers’ Association. Teachers have refused to perform administrative tasks since the beginning of the school year in September 2011. Negotiations between the two parties resumed on Wednesday, January 4.


Bike race returns

A cross-country bike race is returning to Powell River for the second consecutive year.

City of Powell River Counsellor Russell Brewer announced, at the January 5 counsel meeting, that the Vancouver Island Mountain Bike Race Series is coming back to stage an event in Powell River’s backcountry at the end of April.


Homecoming

Jesse Newman, offensive lineman for BC Lions, has announced he will bring the Grey Cup to his hometown of Powell River on Sunday, March 4. He will bring the cup to the afternoon Powell River Kings’ game against Surrey Eagles and residents will have other opportunities to see the cup that day, details of which are to come.


Back home

A wooden reindeer, that was stolen from a front yard Christmas display on Manson Avenue on December 30, has been returned to its owners. Lynn McCann said she is delighted to have had the reindeer returned. McCann’s husband made the reindeer and would not have been able to make a new one due to his health.
