Clean chimneys prevent fires

After a rash of chimney fires in the area, Powell River Fire Rescue is reminding residents to have their chimneys cleaned before they light a fire. “Lately, we’ve had a number of chimney fires,” said Terry Peters, deputy chief. “We want to remind people that before they fire up their wood stoves, that their chimneys are cleaned, their appliances have been inspected and everything is safe,” he said.

The most recent chimney fire was in Cranberry on Thursday, January 10. “There was some damage that happened to the chimney,” Peters said. “It obviously got burning pretty good in there and caused some structural damage in the chimney.”

With temperatures dipping below freezing recently, people are lighting up their wood stoves more often, Peters said. He pointed out that stoves have to be certified as well.
