Powell River Regional District directors have approved 17 waterfront access sites to be considered for opening in 2013. The sites include access to a range of beaches from Frolander Bay to Steamboat Bay off Sarah Point Road, as well as on Texada, Savary and Lasqueti islands.

Directors also supported a list of 12 other waterfront access sites to be considered for opening in subsequent years.

The regional board passed the motion supporting the sites at the January 24 board meeting.

The sites were recommended by the Parks and Greenspace Implementation Advisory Committee, which was established in 2012 to implement recommendations from the parks and greenspace plan, approved in 2010. The committee studied 84 documented potential access points spread across the region, most of which are ministry of transportation and infrastructure rights of way.

Regional district staff estimated it will cost $55,000, not including signage, to open the list of 17 in 2013. The plan is to develop trails on the rights of way. Funds for the project have been included in the 2013 financial plan.
