Hotel court case

Rodmay Heritage Hotel has filed a claim against the City of Powell River for lost revenue pertaining to a lease agreement.

Marion Blank, a director of the Rodmay, said the claim was filed against the city Wednesday, July 8.

“The city has 14 days to respond to the claim,” she said. “After the 14 days there will be a settlement conference via small claims court.”

Blank said the hotel has not secured a tenant for the available leased space in the hotel.

“With each month that passes we realize the impact of the city’s decision with regard to the tenant they turned away from our business,” Blank said.

The hotel lost more than $4,000 over the signed six-month lease and had no other choice but to take the city to small claims court, she added.

Blank said the prospective tenant went to the city for an occupancy permit and was turned down. She said the city’s inspectors said the refusal was for a zoning issue.

Because the matter is in litigation, the City of Powell River and the Municipal Insurance Association of BC have indicated they will not comment on the matter.
