Police arrest four
Marie Ferrier, 23, of Powell River, is facing four drug-related charges after her arrest on Wednesday, June 12. Police took Ferrier into custody after she was caught trafficking a controlled substance. Police also found she was carrying methadone and other illegal prescription drugs. Ferrier is scheduled to make a court appearance on July 24 in Powell River Provincial Court.
Police also arrested three other people from Powell River in relation to the investigation.
The arrests included two men, a 49-year-old and a 32-year-old, and an 18-year-old woman. Police are recommending charges of possession of a controlled substance be laid against the men and a breach of undertaking be laid against the woman after she was discovered with a cell phone contrary to her release conditions from an unrelated matter.
Coal exports
Metro Vancouver’s board has voted 41-4 to oppose a proposed new coal export terminal at Fraser Surrey Docks. The $15-million terminal would transfer coal from the United Sates that arrives on trains to barges that would sail to Texada Island, where the coal would be transferred again to ocean-going ships.
The board heard more than 40 delegations over six and a half hours.
Elected officials also passed motions supporting the call for a health impact assessment and requesting more information from Fraser Surrey Docks and North Vancouver’s Neptune Terminals, which recently received approval to expand its coal exports.
The regional district doesn’t have the authority to block the new coal terminal. The final decision rests with Port Metro Vancouver.
