Powell River community organizations have received more than half a million dollars in gaming grants from the provincial government. In all, 36 organizations received $514,350. The grants ranged from $1,400 to 22 Red Night Squadron Parent Sponsoring Committee to $40,000 to Powell River Model Community Project for Persons with Disabilities.

In January 2012, Premier Christy Clark increased the annual base budget for gaming grants by $15 million to $135 million. About 5,300 organizations received grants during 2011-2012.

Organizations eligible for community gaming grants include agricultural fairs, local festivals and celebrations, heritage associations and museums, arts and culture, sports, environmental, human and social services, public safety, parent advisory councils and district parent advisory councils.


Summer starts

Summer officially starts today, June 20, but cool, wet weather is making it feel more like winter, dubbing the month June-uary.

According to Environment Canada, though, June has been only slightly cooler than usual, with temperatures 0.7º C (Celsius) below normal. There have been roughly half the normal days of sunshine, though.

In Powell River, the average maximum temperature for June 19 is 19.3º C, while the average minimum temperature is 10.4º C. The highest temperature was 31.7º C in 1958 and the lowest was 4.4º C in 1954.

Environment Canada was forecasting cool, wet temperatures for the rest of the week.
