A young man died as the result of a single-vehicle accident in Powell River on Saturday, June 18.

Powell River RCMP received a call at about 6:30 am. A 1991 GMC pickup left the road and plunged into the ocean at the bottom of Nootka Street at Marine Avenue.

Emergency personnel located the vehicle submerged in the water. The driver, a 22-year-old Caucasian male who was the single occupant, was dead. No other vehicles or persons were involved in the incident, according to the police.

The BC Coroners Service is continuing its investigation with the aid of Powell River RCMP.


Red tide

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) has closed subarea 15-1, from about the Westview ferry terminal to Scotch Fir Point, to the harvesting of all bivalve shellfish, due to paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) or red tide.
