A fierce storm hammered the West Coast on Monday, March 12, knocking out power and cancelling ferry sailings.

In Powell River, over 5,600 BC Hydro customers lost their power. BC Ferries cancelled sailings between Powell River and Comox and Powell River and Texada Island in the morning.

Environment Canada issued a wind warning for the region, with winds reaching up to 113 kilometres an hour (km/h). The storm knocked down trees and power lines throughout the area.

The storm forced BC Ferries to cancel sailings on 15 routes.

Theatre campaign

Friends of the Historic Patricia Theatre Society have ramped up a campaign to raise $90,000 for the transition from film to digital. The group is asking 1,000 people to donate $90 each.

All distribution of movies will switch to digital format by the summer of 2012. The Patricia, which has been in operation since 1913 and in its current Townsite location since 1928, projects all of its movies on film. The society determined the components that will make up full digital projection capability will cost just over $75,000, plus HST and freight, for a total of roughly $90,000.

For more information, interested readers can visit the theatre’s website where a video about the campaign is also posted.
