Wildwood residents have been hooked up to the Haslam Lake water system since last month. Stan Westby, City of Powell River’s chief administrative officer, reported at the March 15 council meeting that the switch occurred on February 20. The source for Wildwood’s water had been Powell Lake.

Connecting Wildwood to the Haslam Lake water supply was one part of the $8.5-million upgrade to the city’s drinking water system. It involved the construction of a water main from Townsite to Wildwood and a pump station in Townsite.

The other part of the project was the construction of a reservoir and a UV (ultraviolet) treatment facility on Haslam Street. Westby reported the contractor is working with BC Hydro to power the UV building and reservoir leak testing continues.

Teachers rebel

Some members of BCTF (British Columbia Teachers’ Federation) are urging the organization to stage an illegal strike to protest government legislation passed on the weekend.

Teachers are attending the BCTF annual convention in Vancouver this week. Bill 22, the Education Improvement Act, was passed by the majority Liberal government last Thursday. It sets out daily fines for strike action, ranging from $475 for individual teachers to $1.3 million for the union.

Other options for striking back at the government include pulling voluntary extracurricular supervision, performing duties from bell to bell and challenging the legislation in court.

Teachers were expected to vote on a action plan yesterday, after the Peak’s deadline.
