Weather for April continued to be effected by a weak El Niño bringing drier conditions to Powell River.

John Ede, weather observer at Powell River airport, reported that not only was the month drier, but the region also saw more sunshine and cooler temperatures on average.

The maximum mean temperature recorded for the month was 13.1 degrees Celsius, slightly warmer than the climate normal of 12.8°. The minimum mean for the month was cooler at 3.2° compared with the 30-year climate normal of 4.3° for April. The monthly mean was 8.2°, about half a degree cooler than the 30-year average. Additionally, skies were clearer than usual. About 30 hours more than usual bright sunshine was experienced, with 211.6 hours recorded for the month.

Powell River received 67.2 millimetres of rain over the month, drier than the average of 83.2 millimetres.


May Day camping

With the May Day long weekend approaching, May 16 to 18, BC Parks is expecting record numbers of campers to visit the province’s parks.

The parks service is reminding campers that reservations are required for campsites in over 100 of the province’s 1,029 public parks.

In 2014, more than 133,000 reservations were made through Discover Camping, an increase of almost 10 per cent from 2013. Seventy-five per cent of bookings made in 2014 were placed by British Columbians.
