Transportation plan

Powell River Regional District is entering the second phase of public consultation about a regional transportation plan.

Consultants contracted to develop the plan are holding four meetings this week and next. They are: Wednesday, November 13, Lang Bay Community Hall; Thursday, November 14, Royal Canadian Legion; Wednesday, November 20, Texada Community Hall; and Thursday, November 21, Lund Community Centre. All meetings will be held from 7 to 8:30 pm.

As well, an online survey is available on the regional district’s website.

This phase of the process is considering regional transportation options. They include options for active modes (cycling and walking) and vulnerable road users, transit, roads and vehicles and education, as well as long-term options and other recommendations.

The regional transportation plan will guide future transportation planning within the region. It will consider all modes of water, air and land-based transport as well as connections with Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland.

Trial set

A trial date has been set for Eve Stegenga, the Lund woman who is facing federal charges for refusing to complete the 2011 mandatory short form census. Stegenga said her refusal is an act of protest against the federal government hiring an American arms manufacturer to handle census data. She is one of 54 Canadians who have been charged under the Statistics Act.

Stegenga is representing herself in court and filed her arraignment papers Wednesday, November 6. Trial date is set for March 27, 2014 in Powell River Provincial Court.
