Red tide

Fisheries and Oceans Canada has extended a red tide closure to two more areas in the Powell River region.

Subareas 15-2, from approximately Westview to Lund, and 15-3, from Lund up to Sarah Point and over to Hernando Island, have been added to the previous closure of Okeover Inlet. The areas are closed to the harvest of bivalve mollusks, including all clams, oysters, mussels, geoducks, scallops and cockles, due to unacceptable levels of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP), also known as red tide.

Cooking does not destroy the PSP toxin.

More information, including detailed maps of the closures, can be obtained online by following the links.

Harvesters are strongly urged to contact their local Fisheries and Oceans Canada office for updates and additional information. In Powell River, the office number is 604.485.7963.

All candidates

Powell River’s three ratepayer associations have organized an all-candidates meeting for City of Powell River mayor and council hopefuls.

Townsite, Cranberry and Wildwood ratepayers associations are holding the meeting starting at 7 pm on Tuesday, November 8 at Carlson Community Club. Paul Schachter will be the moderator.

Fall back

Powell River residents will be turning their clocks back one hour this weekend. Daylight saving time ends at 2 am on Sunday, November 6. Readers are encouraged to remember to turn their clocks back one hour before they go to sleep Saturday night.
