Theodosia open house
Powell River residents have an opportunity to find out more about initiatives generated by the Theodosia Stewardship Roundtable, a Tla’amin (Sliammon) First Nation initiative to restore the Theodosia River and maintain and improve fish habitat and salmon runs.
The group is holding its third annual open house on Monday, November 26 in the Arbutus Room at Powell River Recreation Complex. Doors open at 6 pm, with refreshments being served until 6:45 pm. At 7 pm, there will be a traditional performance by the Tla’amin First Nation Cheechlem Chi Chia dancers.
The event includes information about climate change adaptation, a slideshow of the recent habitat enhancement project benefitting the returning salmon population and a study about the return of sockeye to Powell Lake.
Track on budget
City of Powell River’s track project came in under budget, according to information from Dave Douglas, director of financial services. He reported at the November 15 committee-of-the-whole meeting that the new track and field located at Timberlane Park came in at $2,338,524, or $206,243 under budget.
The city borrowed $170,670 for the project, but only requires $93,134. Douglas said staff over borrowed $77,536 in 2011 in anticipation of remaining project costs. The city will pay the over-borrowed amount back now, he said.
The funding allocation for the project is: School District 47, $609,938; RinC grant, $656,800; Powell River Community Forest Ltd., $978,652; city’s short-term borrowing, $93,134.
