Board appoints chair

Powell River Regional District board of directors has appointed Patrick Brabazon, Electoral Area A director, chair of the parks and greenspace plan implementation advisory committee. The motion was passed at the November 24 board meeting.

Chris McNaughton, a City of Powell River director on the board, voted in opposition to the motion, because, he said, the board could have waited a few weeks to see if there would be a city-appointed director who might be interested in being chair. “What I have seen over the three years participating here is all of the committees are chaired by rural directors,” he said. “I just feel it would have been appropriate to wait a little bit.”

The regional district parks and greenspace plan was approved in November 2010.

An advisory group will be established to oversee implementation of its 32 recommendations.

Football mania

Jesse Newman, a native from Powell River, won his second career Grey Cup with BC Lions on Sunday, November 27 in Vancouver. The Lions beat Winnipeg Blue Bombers 34 to 23. Unfortunately, Newman suffered an injury early in the game when he collided with Blue Bomber Bryant Turner and did not play for the remainder of the game.

Newman previously won the Grey Cup with Calgary Stampeders in 2008. This season he helped the Lions come back from a 0-5 start to win 13 of their following 15 games. The Lions dominated the Grey Cup and won handily, even with a late game push by the Blue Bombers.
