Storm hits coast
Travel plans were disrupted and some Powell River residents lost their power when fierce storms hit BC’s West Coast over the weekend.
Winds of over 100 kilometres-an-hour knocked trees on power lines and forced BC Ferries to cancel 40 sailings on nine different routes on Sunday, September 29. The strongest winds were recorded at 105 kilometres-an-hour in the middle of the Strait of Georgia.
On the Powell River-Comox route, two roundtrips, the 3:15 and 7:15 pm sailings from Comox, were cancelled, both on Sunday and Saturday, September 28. The last roundtrip on the Powell River-Texada Island route, the 10:10 pm from Texada and the 11 pm from Powell River, was cancelled Sunday. BC Hydro reported over 2,000 customers in the Powell River area lost their power Sunday night.
Concession opens
City of Powell River has awarded a contract to operate the concession at Powell River Recreation Complex to Planet Cleve, which operates a mobile food cart in the community.
Bill Reid, director of parks, recreation and culture, said the city received two submissions in response to a request for proposals to provide food services at the concession, which was closed in 2012 as part of budget reductions. Reid said the Planet Cleve submission met qualifications and the other didn’t.
The concession has to open during Powell River Kings’ hockey games, as well as during minor hockey tournaments and Powell River Regals’ games, but it can be open any other time the recreation complex is open, Reid said.
The concession is slated to open on Friday, October 11.
