Campfire ban lifts
Coastal Fire Centre has rescinded its campfire ban.
Effective at noon, Friday, August 28, campfires no bigger than 0.5 metres wide by 0.5 metres high, and open fires in outdoor stoves, are now allowed in the fire centre’s jurisdiction.
Anyone with a campfire must also have a hand tool, such as a shovel or at least eight litres of water, to put the fire out. It must be fully extinguished and cold before it can be left.
The centre has not lifted other fire bans. Category 2 open fires (small backyard burning piles) remain prohibited. This includes burning of material larger than 0.5 metres in width and height, burning of stubble or grass up to 0.2 hectares, fireworks, sky lanterns and burning barrels, and binary exploding targets. Category 3 fires also remain restricted.
The centre does not have jurisdiction within the City of Powell River’s boundaries, as the city has its own forest fire prevention bylaws.
Residents are reminded to call 1.800.663.5555 or *5555 on a cell phone to report a wildfire, unattended campfire or open burning violation.
One extra trip
Sundays between September 13 and October 11 will have one extra BC Ferries round-trip sailing on the Horseshoe Bay - Langdale route.
The change is an extension of the summer schedule, with Sundays resembling the Monday and Saturday schedule used during the peak season.
