Upgrades continue

Seismic upgrade work on Henderson Elementary School is ahead of schedule.

School District 47 secretary treasurer Steve Hopkins said he expects the project to be completed by the end of November 2014.

“Most of the original seismic work is all done,” said Hopkins in his report to Powell River Board of Education. “Now it is building envelope and site work remaining.”

Completion was originally scheduled for the end of March 2015, but during the summer, Hopkins said he decided to increase the size of the crews and have them work longer hours to speed the completion up. The project also had a month more time without school in session due to the teachers’ contract dispute.

An expansion to the original project scope now includes new flooring and light fixtures in some classrooms as well as painting in most others.

Schedule change

Travellers using the Queen of Burnaby to sail between Powell River and Little River will need to take note of a schedule change starting October 1.

In working with the Northern Sunshine Coast Ferry Advisory Committee, BC Ferries has moved the daily 10:10 am sailing from Little River and noon sailing from Powell River 10 minutes earlier to 10 am and 11:50 am respectively.

The change is to reduce delays for the North Island Princess serving Texada Island. BC Ferries expects the changes will provide customers with improved schedule reliability, while still meeting net cost savings targets established by the province.

The new schedule will be in effect until March 31, 2015.
