More closures

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) has closed coastal sections in the Powell River area to the harvest of all shellfish.

The closures, which came into effect on August 30, are due to excessive rainfall that occurred on the south coast of BC, according to a DFO notice. The Pacific Interdepartmental Shellfish Committee agreed that precautionary closures in many shellfish harvest areas were warranted.

Harvest of bivalve shellfish is now prohibited until further notice in all of Area 15, excluding that portion of subarea 15-2 described as the intertidal foreshore of Savary Island, and all of Area 16.

Donations at credit union

Residents can now make a donation to the Lac-Mégantic community at the First Credit Union Powell River branch.

On July 6, a 73-car freight train carrying crude oil derailed near the centre of Lac-Mégantic, Quebec. The massive explosion claimed the lives of 47 people and destroyed over 30 buildings, including the library and archives.

Mayor Gerry Furney of Port McNeill is asking for municipalities across Canada to support the Lac-Mégantic community. City of Powell River council discussed Furney’s request and resolved to begin a public campaign.

“Our hearts go out to the people of Lac-Mégantic,” said Mayor Dave Formosa. “I encourage all citizens to support this stricken community during this time of need.”
