As children head back to school next week, police are reminding drivers to be more aware and drive with caution.
“The City [of Powell River] will be putting up the school zone speed limit signs this week,” said Constable Chris Bakker of Powell River RCMP. Police are making school zone speed enforcement a focus this fall.
Officers are reminding drivers that they need to be more cautious with children on the roads. “Heading back to school can be exciting for students and they may not be paying attention to the vehicles on the road,” said Bakker. “It is important that students and drivers both pay attention to ensure everyone’s safety.”
Starting September 4, school zones are in effect from 8 am to 5 pm unless otherwise marked. The speed limit in school zones is 30 kilometres per hour. Speeders will be given fines.
“If you’re one to 20 kilometres over the posted limit, the fine is $196; from 21 to 40 kilometres over, the fine is $253; if you’re 41 to 60 kilometres over the posted limit the fine is $368 and because it’s considered excessive speeding the driver’s car will be impounded for seven days,” said Bakker.
Police suggest that parents review road safety rules with their children so they can make better decisions in traffic. For drivers, police suggest that drivers leave themselves a little more travel time so they can avoid rushing.
