EMOTIONALLY POWERFUL: The 12th annual shoe memorial recognizing the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women will be held on December 6 at Town Centre Mall from 10 am to 5 pm.

Powell River RCMP Victim Services and qathet Safety and Advocacy for Everyone (SAFE) will be holding the 12th annual shoe memorial in the Town Centre mall on December 6, from 10 am to 5 pm.

According to a media release from Powell River RCMP, the memorial takes place on the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, and is held to commemorate the 14 women who were murdered at Montreal’s Ecole Polytechnique in 1989.

The shoe memorial will be set up in the interior hallway of the mall, outside of Save-On-Foods. Attached to each pair of shoes is a short biography of a woman or child who died due to violence or is missing due to suspicious circumstances.

Police victim services coordinator Christine Schreiber will be there with justice facility dog Serrano and members of qathet SAFE.

Schreiber stated that the shoe memorial is an emotionally powerful display and emphasizes that “it is an important opportunity to increase awareness about gender-based violence and to highlight the support services that are available in Powell River.”

Victim Services and qathet SAFE invite all community members to come by and take a moment to visit and to honour the memorial display, the release stated.
