Regional board briefs: Designates regional park; Provides cannabis legalization comments

Powell River Regional District board approved a committee recommendation at its October 26 meeting to designate the 21 acres of land donated to the regional district near Dixon Road as Rossander Regional Park. The land was donated to the local government by the late Martin Rossander, a prominent Powell River environmental and social activist who died in 2012.

Provides cannabis legalization comments
The board approved a motion to send provincial public safety minister Mike Farnworth a letter communicating that cannabis legalization will be bring increased costs to the local government for law enforcement, which is an increased financial burden yet to be addressed by the province.

Appoints weed-control officer
District manager of operational services Shawn Gullette was appointed as the local government’s weed-control officer at the October 26 board meeting. The board also approved a weed-control bylaw at the meeting. Gullette will work with property owners to stop the spread of noxious plants such as various knotweed and hogweed species.

Advocates for centre funding
The regional board approved a committee recommendation to send BC Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction a letter requesting the province continue its financial support for Powell River Community Resource Centre. Powell River Employment Program Society executive director Stuart Clark asked for the board’s assistance after the non-profit that operates the centre had not heard whether the province plans to provide 2018 funding.

Requests wildfire mitigation improvements
The board will submit correspondence to BC Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development requesting the provincial government improve its support for reducing fire risk in urban interface areas.
